Dohány Street Synagogue

After the Jewish ghetto was liberated in 1945, there was work to identify the dead, and 2281 victims were buried in 24 mass graves in the garden. Although the names of many in the mass graves are unknown, relatives of those that could be identified placed memorial plaques around the graves.

In addition to the plaques for people buried in mass graves in the garden, "family members erected gravestones in memory of those who lost their lives in forced labour camps or were deported and who were never afforded burials worthy of a human being. We placed their gravestones here and thus the wall of the synagogue courtyard, the place where they prayed as celebrated with their families in days of old, became one of the places where we can still remember them. May their souls be granted eternal life."
