Abraham Perlman immigrated to Canada in 1908, and in August 1909, wife Leah Schwartz and six children joined him. A year later, Fay was born, but her birth was not recorded until 1929, after Abraham's death, so the record was signed, in Hebrew, apparently by Leah. Abraham naturalized as Abram Perelman in the Montreal Circuit Court in 1911.
It's not clear where the Perlman family came from. In his 1911 naturalization, Abram [sic] claimed to be from Chidnev, Woholin, Russia (today, Chudniv, Ukraine). His 1928 obituary noted that he was Secretary of the Bessarabia Burial Society. In their 1940 National Registrations, Issie claimed to have been born in Montreal, and that his parents were from Bessarabia, but the older Harry claimed to have been from Volinar (Volhynia Province). Issie never made a subsequent application for a naturalization certificate (none was necessary), but Harry Perlman claimed in his 1946 application for an Imperial Certificate of Naturalization to be from Luber, Volina (Lyubar, Volhynia), which is about 20 km from Chudniv, both close to the city of Zhytomyr, Ukraine. Bessarabia mostly corresponds to today's Moldova, including a bit of Ukraine, but with no overlap with Volhynia. Abraham's brothers, Nathan (Nachman) and Max, also claimed to be from Chudniv. It is possible that Leah Schwartz was from Bessarabia, and we would need her 1940 address to see her 1940 National Registration.
There is some question about the spelling of Perlman. Abraham naturalized as Abram Perelman. His brother Max immigrated as Michal Perelman, and Nathan immigrated as Naten Perelman. Max married in Montreal in 1912, written as Michael Perlman, but probably not by Max; the parties signed in Hebrew, Max signing as Michal Perelman.
